We do receive compensation when a sale or referral occurs from many of the insurance providers and marketing partners on our site. That may impact which products we display and where they appear on our site. But it does not influence our meticulously researched editorial content, what we write about, or any reviews or recommendations we may make. Car insurance rates in Louisiana have steadily increased in the past few years. Louisiana drivers pay an average rate of $117 per month for minimum coverage and $218 per month for full coverage. Meanwhile, the average cost of car insurance nationwide is $105 for state-minimum coverage and $196 for full coverage.
Insurance rates are high in Louisiana for a few reasons. Louisianans are twice as likely to file injury claims in an accident, and with such low minimum-coverage requirements, it’s not enough to cover injury in about one-third of cases. As a result, Louisiana residents are three times as likely to go to court. All these factors drive up the cost of car insurance for everyone.[1]
Here’s what you need to know about finding affordable coverage in Louisiana.
State Farm, USAA, and National General offer the cheapest car insurance policies for Louisiana drivers.

Average Louisiana car insurance rates by city
Where you live, even down to the ZIP code, affects your car insurance rates. In general, insurance companies charge more in cities than in more remote areas. Cities with higher populations have a higher likelihood of accidents, vandalism, and vehicle theft. Theft and vandalism cause more property damage claims, and accidents cause property damage liability claims.[2]
Car insurance in New Orleans is going to be more expensive than in more rural areas of Louisiana. Here’s how rates compare by city.

Average Louisiana car insurance rates by age and gender
Insurance companies can take your age and gender into account when setting rates. Men typically pay higher rates for insurance because they’re more likely to cause injury or damage in an accident. In Louisiana, women caused 87 fatal crashes in 2024, for example, compared to 364 for men.
Drivers younger than 25 typically pay high rates because of a lack of experience and risky driving behavior. Young drivers — specifically 18-year-old drivers — had the highest serious crash rate of any age group, while 20-year-old drivers caused more fatal crashes.[3]
Average rates decrease as you age and gain more experience on the road. The table below illustrates how your age and gender affect your rates in Louisiana.

Different types of cars provide varying levels of protection for the driver and passengers. They also have different repair costs, theft risks, and more.
These factors mean the make and model of your car is an important factor when it comes to your insurance costs. Louisiana is dominated by the oil and gas industry, so it’s no surprise that pickup trucks are some of the most popular vehicles in the state.
The table below shows how rates fluctuate based on the car you drive.
Vehicle | Average Monthly Quote |
---|---|
Ford F-Series | $227 |
Chevrolet Silverado | $241 |

How your driving record affects car insurance rates in Louisiana
Your driving record provides a big clue for insurance companies. If you have an incident on your record, your insurance company is more likely to have to pay out claims, which affects your rates. You’ll get the cheapest car insurance in Louisiana if you have a clean record. Your rates will increase if you get a speeding ticket, and even more so if you cause an accident.
Louisiana drivers with a DUI on their record also pay much higher average rates since they’re more likely to cause severe bodily injury or death as opposed to mere property damage. For example, in 2024, Louisiana drunk drivers caused 26% of all fatal car accidents in the state.[4]
Drivers with a clean record pay an average of $168 per month for car insurance. The table below shows how different levels of driving infractions affect average insurance rates in Louisiana.
Driver Record | Average Monthly Quote | % Increase Compared to Good Drivers |
---|---|---|
With accident | $271 | 51% |
With speeding ticket | $259 | 44% |
With DUI | $307 | 71% |
Insurance companies use your credit history to make a credit-based insurance score. They see your credit history as a predictor of whether you’ll submit a claim. While some states don’t allow insurers to check your credit, Louisiana does.
Drivers with excellent credit typically pay the lowest rates, while drivers with poor credit have higher rates. One way to save on your premiums is to prioritize keeping your credit healthy.
The table below shows how your credit history affects your rates in Louisiana.

You’ll need to make many decisions when it comes to buying coverage for your car, and that can be overwhelming. But the good news is you have a lot of ways to save:[5]
Drive safely
Many insurers offer safe driving discounts that help lower your average rate, but driving safely also helps you secure lower premiums in general.
Shop around for quotes
Get several quotes from other companies offering insurance in Louisiana. Two companies with the same coverage level may have very different costs.
Increase your deductible
A higher deductible means a lower average annual rate, but make sure you save up to help pay the extra expense before you need to file a claim.
Lower your coverage level
If you can afford to pay for damage to your car and own it outright, consider dropping down to minimum coverage.
Bundle your policies
Many insurers offer a lower average rate if you buy more than one insurance policy, such as homeowners or renters insurance.

Methodology
Insurify data scientists analyzed more than 90 million quotes served to car insurance applicants in Insurify’s proprietary database to calculate the premium averages displayed on this page. These premiums are real quotes that come directly from Insurify’s 50+ partner insurance companies in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Quote averages represent the median price for a quote across the given coverage level, driver subset, and geographic area.
Unless otherwise specified, quoted rates reflect the average cost for drivers between 20 and 70 years old with a clean driving record and average or better credit (a credit score of 600 or higher).
Liability-only premium averages correspond to policies with the following coverage limits:
- Bodily injury limits between state-minimum rates and $50,000 per person, $100,000 per accident
- Property damage limits between $10,000 and $50,000
- No additional coverage
- Comprehensive coverage with a $1,000 deductible
